faults in myths..

mythology has always fascinated me.. especially Greek and Roman mythology which is filled with hidden meaning and symbolism..

i once read somewhere that the Greek gods gifted mankind two small pouches that they tied to a stick and balanced it on their shoulders.. one contained the owner's faults.. the other is the faults of the people around the bearer.. however, during the placing of the pouches, it is said that the god had placed them wrongly.. the bag containing one's own faults were positioned behind the bearer, in a position where he or she could not see it easily.. the bag containing the faults of others, being in front of the bearer, allowed mankind to see easily other people's faults, but ultimately, not their own..

maybe this is not how it really happened, but i can only interpret this story as some sort of joke on the ancient gods part.. the author probably meant for this piece to be an imagery and explanation as to why we always can see the shortcomings of others and yet could not distinguish our own as easily.. on a personal opinion, i am very much reminded of the saying: 'a blessing in disguise'. perhaps this could be a reason to how things are..

trying to find the original of this myth, but no such luck.. if only i can recover all the books that i have ever read.. ok, i was thinking of faults today.. *surrender*
