yingz's chinese new year..

consists of a few rituals..

1. the never ending travelling.. *sigh this is how it looks like=>

(a few days before CNY) KMN --> K.Lipis--> (2nd day of the New Year) T.Intan --> (sometime before school starts) KMN

and just why would my family do this?? aha, its all cos of Tradition!! *irritated with all the travelling.. i love my grannies and granpas a lot okay.. its just the travelling that gets me.. *still grumpy.. its tradition for the girls to troop back to mummy's home on the 2nd day with their other half in tow.. and for all the blood lines to congregate back to daddy's house with their wives and kids (ancestral house) on the 1st day.. but i like going back to T.Intan the most.. cos of all the food there.. *evil laugh esp granma's homemade yam cake.. *mouth full now the schedule is extended to include my trips from and to SS15.. thank goodness Kean-senpai and Sis Hui takes me with them!! if alone i think i will be so blur.. lol..

2. (aha!! my favourite) cookie critic..

every year, all these nice aunties and uncles will supply us with cookies (mostly homemade) and their idea of dessert.. this is usually after mum does her CNY hamper rounds.. (mum gives out bags of foodstuff to friends.. her's and dad's..) and they reciprocrate.. anyway, i'm not sure if mum did that this year.. its my job to help her with the baking usually.. hmm, still Aunty Hua, Kean-senpai's mum, sent a few tubs of cookies that she made together with Sis Ching.. its my habit to officiate the opening of the tubs, *rip the tape off , taste the cookies, *jacking motion to my mouth, and dish out comments *wink.. i have tasted a lot of cookies (i'll never forget that pineapple tart that one of my Aunts made.. it was so horrible that it left a scar..) and so here this year's lot..

- (chocolate chip cookies) -
yer~ why the shape like this de??? haha, but *salivating this is really nice!! the texture is correctly light and crunchy.. i love the mix of nuts and chocolate chips inside.. its not overly sweet (i hate ultra sweet stuff!!! *bleah) and not rock hard either.. a masterpiece to enjoy!! thumbs up for Aunty Hua and Sis Ching.. (err, sis, was the shape your idea?? lol~)

-(cashew nut candy)
hmm, i advocate the habit of eating nuts.. its a healthy one and i like the crunchy feeling of a perfect occlusion.. the slivers of the nuts are held together by a film of hardened golden syrup and cut into small squares.. i must say that the crunchiness of this sweet holds out well and the syrup didn't melt even when we chucked it in the car for a few days.. on another note, how did Aunty Hua manage to cut it so well without the candy shattering?? *salute however, i can't say that i liked this as much as the chocolate chip cookies.. its a bit too sweet for my taste.. but granma lurves it..

-(coconut cookies)
okay, at least i think they are coconunt cookies.. i don't like this one, i'm afraid to say.. the texture is harder and more heavy than most.. but its crunchy at best and not overly sweet.. no, the problem here is me.. i am not a fan of coconut taste.. not in cookies anyway.. sorry, Aunty Hua..

-('honeycomb' biscuits)
these are from Uncle Johnny who supplies our newpapers.. haha.. i quite like this one.. he gave them last year too so i am familiar with the taste.. these biscuits are kinda oily sometimes as they are made from batter that is then fried in hot oil.. but not this year's.. they are better than last year's if i say so myself..

-(kuih bangkit)
hmm, or is it called something else? those small white crunchy, floury looking biscuits.. this one is from Aunty Yong.. Zhien-senpai's mum.. *grin haven't seen senpai for a time lur~ Aunty passed this to mum.. she makes this cookie almost every Chinese New Year as far as i know.. the texture for this year is slightly heavier than the other year wor~ but the taste is still the same.. some people like it real sweet.. but luckily, Aunty likes it otherwise.. *hehe

-(pineapple tarts)
the best things come last, eh?? so some people say.. this is the 3rd tradition of our family.. piano teacher's pineapple tarts.. she used to make cookies to sell all the time.. but then she stopped years ago.. so now, it is not easy to get her to sell her cookies.. luckily, she does make exceptions.. so we buy these from her every year.. the quantity depends entirely on how many she makes.. and that too depends on the availability of the pineapple.. lol.. but its worth it.. i promise! i tasted pineapple tarts from a lot of places, but i like her's the best! the texture this year is slightly firmer and that's good, cos last year, even the slightest touch from a clumsy will result in a crumbled mess formerly known as a pineapple tart.. kaka.. the filling is homemade, so it is the same moist, flavourful pineapple taste.. this one cookie RULES!!!
