In Her Shoes, Jennifer Weiner..

it says on the cover that this story is in film format now.. i don't know about that cos i read the book.. haha..

this story is about two sisters who have totally different characters and proirities.. Rose Feller is responsible elder sister who inherited the 'books' while Maggie May Feller is the irresponsible younger girl who got the 'looks'.. Rosie is a successful lawyer and has everything in the world including a boring life devoid of any fun.. Maggie on the other hand is the life of the party.. but her life is in shambles, she has problems comprehending simple written English and her bank account is virtually non-existent.. ok, sure she has loads of makeup essentials but she can't afford the shoes that her sister has.. nor the residence, car or cash.. so, she nicks them off her sister whenever she can.. i find their lives immensely pitiful.. cos from the way i see it, if you can pick up both their characters and mix it evenly, then split it into two equal parts again, there would be no more problems.. cos Rose needs to learn how to dress properly and to get a life.. Maggie has too much of that.. Maggie on the other hand needs to learn how to take responsibilities and to face her problems.. not run from them.. who better to teach her than Rose who spent her life clearing the messes that Maggie created in her wake?? *sigh.. too bad it doesn't work out that way.. *sad~

owh, there are some pretty nasty parts in the book.. like the time when Maggie slept with Rose's boyfriend.. yeah, and that happened to be Rose's first boyfriend in her long boring life.. real bad situation.. and Rose kicked them both out that night.. Maggie had nowhere to go.. hmm.. that's basically the main drama in this story.. two sisters who are bizzarely polar and yet they have so much more in common.. they lost their mum who had an 'accident' when they were young.. she was mentally ill and crashed her car that fateful day, leaving her husband and two daughters.. their dad was not very happy with their granmother after that and efficiently kept her out of their lives thereafter..

so, basic gist, as with all stories, got problem, run from problem, land from the frying pan into the fire, heap up all ther ever increasing problems.. enter saviour in so form/ semblence, take a deep breath, start to solve problems.. run into some minor blocks.. presevere, problem solved.. back to happy life.. the end.. lol..

hmm, but there's a very interesting observation that Maggie made in the book.. it was when she sneaked into her sister's old college and hid there, living in the library.. to blend in, and to pass time, she started reading books and poems in the library for the first time in her life and to study seriously. she discovered that she actually liked it.. the day when she managed to answer a question in poetry class correctly while no one else can, Maggie fell in love with poetry.. she said she loved it because it was the same for everyone.. no matter if she had reading problems, she could still decipher the poem better than us because she is used to reading and diseccting words slowly.. we read at a normally fast pace and thus we tend to lose the hidden messages in the poet's piece.. i can't help but see logic in that.. reading a poem is deciphering and seeing thorugh the layers of words clearly to grasp the poet's meaning.. so, it would be more easy to do for someone who do that everyday compared to us who skim thorough texts like water flowing down the concentration gradient.. her ability to decipher poems and read made her feel useful and capable for the first time in her life.. she was not pitied and loked down upon or taken as a slut.. *grin* i know that feeling, that was how working on debate during my Form3 made me feel.. all that hard work, it was worth it, coz i found myself there.. *hugs self^^
altogether, not a book that makes me jump up and discover a relavation, but its good for a cosy read on boring days like these days.. that's probably one of the main reasons that i can down so many books now.. just like a stressed alcoholic will down his drink.. lol..
